Gili Islands

Gili Facts

The Gili Islands are an archipelago of three small islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air—located off the northwest coast of Lombok. A main appeal is that there are no motorized vehicles; transportation is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn cart, known as a cidomo. Each island has a distinct atmosphere:

  • Gili Trawangan: The largest and most developed, known for its vibrant nightlife, numerous restaurants, and dive shops. It attracts a younger, party-oriented crowd.

  • Gili Meno: The smallest and quietest of the three, with a serene atmosphere that appeals to couples and honeymooners seeking relaxation.

  • Gili Air: Offers a balance between the lively Gili Trawangan and the peaceful Gili Meno. It features a chill vibe with guesthouses, cafes, bars, and good snorkeling spots.

Things to do on the Gili Islands

  • Go snorkeling and diving: The Gilis are famous for their clear, turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life, including sea turtles. You can join a group or private boat tour to visit different spots, including the famous underwater statues near Gili Meno.

  • Cycle around the island: With no cars, renting a bicycle is a popular way to explore. It takes about an hour or two to cycle the circumference of each island.

  • Experience the nightlife: On Gili Trawangan, a different bar hosts a party each night of the week with DJs and live bands. Gili Air has a more laid-back party scene, while Gili Meno is very quiet.

  • Visit a turtle sanctuary: Both Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno have turtle conservation sites where you can see hatchlings in holding pools before they are released into the sea.
